Car tolls in Europe – the means for improving the road transport standard

Car toll payments need to be made when international freight forwarding services are being carried out by the network of freight forwarders. These tolls are payed for using the highways.  They help improve the standard of the transport services, because better maintained highways means better care and safety of the cargo and goods in both complete loads and small shipments.

Tolls contribute to the even traffic distribution

Moreover, tolls contribute to better directing of freight traffic provided by the  forwarders throughout Europe. This allows each country to distribute the traffic on its territory evenly.  In the modern conditions of increased mobility, and an increased share of international freight forwarding in the total freight forwarding services, the even distribution of the traffic, as much as it is possible in each country is important for ensuring free roads and optimal conditions for transport by the international freight forwarders.

The need to ensure a cleaner environment

Preserving the environment and the continuous desire to keep it clean is a global aspiration, in which the forwarders throughout Europe are also a part of. Certain regions in the countries where the freight forwarders Europe provide their logistic services need to remain as unspoiled as possible, which means minimal carbon emissions from the road transport. This requires for resources and financial means. Part of the tolls for the main roads in the European countries is used for that.

The modernization of the toll system in Europe

The modernization of the toll system for the tolls payed by the member companies of the European network for logistics services, is done through the introduction of modern equipment and technologies for toll collection.  This contributes to the process of introducing tolls for a growing number of roads in more European countries.  At least 17 countries collect road tolls, and some countries have a vignette system.  The vignettes are for different time periods – daily, weekly, monthly and annual. The cash payment of tolls is being replaced by electronic payment.

The benefits of electronic toll payment

With the electronic payment of tolls, a number of negative effects, such as waiting and staying at the toll stations in order to pay in cash, the delay of the vehicles as well as the necessity for such toll payment points.

There is already evidence of an increased road capacity of those roads where the electronic toll payment systems have been installed.

The future of toll collection – for inland city networks

In the future, the collection of toll taxes is expected to be done not only for the higher class intercity roads, but for the city road networks as well.  This will cause the vehicles, including those of the member companies of the freight forwarding association to avoid passing through the cities. As a result, the number of vehicles passing through the busy roads I the cities will decrease, and the traffic in the central parts of the cities will improve too.
