Green logistics with container ships – for reducing the negative side effects of freight forwarding on the environment

Green logistics is part of the global effort for the reduction of human activity on the environment.  The member companies of the European logistics network are active participants in activities for the reduction of waste which pollute the environment surrounding us.  Another area in which the European network for logistics services has achieved success is the reduction of fuel consumption through the use of the most optimal routes.

The waste causing the pollution around us

The daily use of a multitude of packaged goods creates enormous quantities of waste.  The majority of this packing is made of plastic, which is a serious polluter. It is easy to realise how much waste we are all creating when we look at the photographs of the polluted sea and ocean coasts.

The reason for using more packaging

A growing number of commodities are being produced in remote parts of the world, rather than locally.  They are transported to different countries around the world for consumption and use. In order to safely travel such big distances, these goods need to be well packed.

The Freight forwarders in Europe are in charge of the transport of a number of goods produced in one country to other countries.  They include: food, clothing, equipment and many others.  The member companies of the European network for transportation offer their customers easily degradable packaging for the forwarding.  The sturdy plastic packaging is necessary to bind and keep the products together, but the individual items can be packaged in lighter and easily degradable packaging. This decreases the volumes of the waste.

The use of containers for forwarding

One container ship can transport the amount of goods and cargo which can be transported by hundreds of airplanes. This is why, freight forwarding with containers of large quantities of goods allows for the maintenance of low forwarding prices. The member companies of the European logistics network offer such forwarding solutions to their clients in order to offer low prices for the forwarding and low total costs.

Specialised containers for the different goods

There are different types of containers for the different types of goods. For example there are temperature controlled containers for perishable goods. This allows for the products to travel the long distances without danger of deteriorating.  For example, a temperature of minus 60 degrees can be maintained for the transport of certain goods.

The container ships emit much lesser quantities of carbon dioxide

The European logistic companies use container ships for their forwarding services, because they are more environmentally friendly. Firstly, a container ship emits about 40 times less carbon dioxide than a large airplane and three times less than a large truck.  Apart from that, forwarding with container ships is two and a half times more energy efficient than with airplanes.

One container ship can carry more than 8,000 containers at a time

The large capacity of the container ships allows for it to carry more than 8,000 containers at a time. This is equal to the entire storage capacity of several large warehouses.  The length of today’s container ship can reach 400 meters, and forwarding very large quantities of goods with them is very easy.  This allows us to maintain low prices for forwarding, reduces the harmful emissions and improves energy efficiency. This is why, using sea freight for distribution logistics with container ships is one of the main transport types which is used by the forwarders throughout Europe for forwarding goods and cargos.
