The OBU device is used to measure the latitude and longitude of the vehicle. These measurements are done with the help of satellites. After that the measurements are compared to a digital map in the OBU. This allows each travel on the road network to be registered in the device.
Using the data from the OBU for calculating the outstanding tolls
The data obtained by the OBU includes the exact route travelled by the vehicle. Based on that, the outstanding tolls for the vehicle can be calculated. This is why when the vehicle enters a country where the OBU system is utilised, the device must be switched on and left on during the entire stay in the country. It needs to be on even when a no-toll road is being used. The switched on OBU device must show a continuous green light.
Installing an OBU
The device comes with a manual for quick installing. The mounting is done via the vacuum cups which come with the device. No tools are needed. The windshield where the device must be installed must be clean before it is mounted. The device must be placed horizontally. It shouldn’t obstruct the visibility of the driver. It has to be connected to the cigarette lighter plug and to remain plugged in.
The installation of an OBU with a fixed cable is possible too. This though needs to be done by an authorised company. This service is paid.
The data registered in regard to the maximum allowed loading and the emission class must comply with the vehicle’s documents.
Using an OBU in Belgium and ordering a device
Belgium is a country where OBU is used for reporting the travelled distances and calculating the fees due for that. The device is given against a 135 Euro deposit. It can be ordered through the Road User Potal ora service station – service point.
Printing the invoices for the tolls paid
The invoices for the tolls paid based on OBU calculations can be downloaded from the Red User Portal. The freight forwarders can request paper copies be sent to them by mail for the transport services provided.
The future possible connection of the toll systems in the European countries with the help of OBU
The OBU device allows for plans to made to connect the toll systems of the different European countries in the future which will be a big benefit for the freight forwarding association.
Currently, there is a joint project for the use of OBU in Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland and Poland.
